Celebrating a Centennial: WISH-TV and IPAMA Honor Negro History Week

A truly historic celebration unfolded right here at IPAMA! We were absolutely honored to be selected by WISN-TV Channel 12 as their on-site location for a multi-faceted tribute to the Centennial of Negro History Week.

The special broadcast, which can be viewed in its entirety below, transformed IPAMA into a vibrant stage for storytelling, reflection, and community. Channel 12 used our unique space to not only mark this milestone anniversary but also to bring to life the incredible legacies of trailblazers who shaped American history.

Why IPAMA and Why Now?

Selecting IPAMA for this landmark event makes perfect sense. As "the home for cultural influence on the northeast side," IPAMA's mission has always been to preserve, honor, and elevate the rich tapestry of Black culture and heritage. For Channel 12, an institution with its own long history in the community, partnering with us for the 100th anniversary of Negro History Week—the forerunner to Black History Month—was a powerful statement of shared commitment.

Negro History Week was first introduced by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Seeing Channel 12 broadcast live from our campus on this specific centennial felt like a homecoming for history itself. It was a merging of two institutions dedicated to informing and inspiring our city.

Legends and Trailblazers: Stories and Legacies Shared

The core of WISN-TV's special broadcast was the focus on the "Legends and Trailblazers." These are the stories that must be told, re-told, and preserved. They are here for you, in the broadcast and as part of the ongoing mission here at IPAMA.

Through incredible features and interviews, they brought to life the work of:

  • Dr. Carter G. Woodson: The brilliant historian and educator whose vision 100 years ago gave birth to this celebration of Black history.

  • Abolitionist Heroes: The brave men and women who fought tirelessly for freedom.

  • Civil Rights Pioneers: Those who sat, marched, and sacrificed to ensure equal rights.

  • Local Wisconsin Trailblazers: Stories of entrepreneurs, artists, and leaders right here in our own community.

These are not just stories from the past; they are blueprints for our future. Seeing these powerful narratives unfold on our campus was a profound moment for everyone involved.

Our Thanks to WISH-TV and the Community

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone at WISN-TV Channel 12—from the anchors to the crew—for their passion and dedication in bringing this event to life. We also want to thank the community for its continued support. This celebration was for all of us, reminding us of where we’ve been and how far we’ve yet to go.
